A Word to the Wise....

I would like to take a few minutes to point out something. You all know quite a bit about art. How could you NOT???!!!!
But you forget to USE what you know. You get so wrapped up in following rules, and trying to please the teacher you forget to THINK! You just do. You do something, anything. But does it have meaning to you? Have you made it relevant? Have you pushed the boundaries of what the material can do? Are you having fun? Do you know what you want your work to say?
Think about the tools you are using. Think about what makes them different from other media. Think about what makes watercolor, or charcoal, or whatever so special. How is it different from other stuff you use? Then push it.
Use those characteristics to the breaking point. For example: because charcoal is "movable" use that quality, when you use charcoal. Put it on the paper and allow it to move; force it to move. Don't try to make it look so perfect. The ability to show fingerprints and smearing can make your drawing look more emotional, more expressive, and your own mark making makes it so much more personal!
When painting, don't always blend everything perfectly. Being able to see brush marks is exciting in a painting. That's what keeps us so interested in the Impressionists' work.
Play with your materials. See what they can do. Experiment, enjoy, think!!!!

  1. Hah, I don't think I actually did any of the summer assignments and it worked out just fine for me.

    P.S.
    Mama B, I got a 4 on my AP.

  2. Hey YOU! Don't tell them that!!!!
You worked so hard, how could I ever get mad at you?! Remember, you were the one who was first to do the digital submission and it worked out well.
I received a report of your score from Mrs. Day and that was exactly what I expected you to get! I am so pleased about it. I hope you are too.
Your work came up in conversation at the workshop I attended in Texas last week. (BTW it was an awesome workshop.) We were talking about anime' and I spoke about your concentration. I told them I was pleased with the way it evolved, but I didn't have your score at that time.
I'm glad you feel comfortable getting on here. Feel free to stop in and add to the conversations.
I hope you're having a good summer. Let me know what is going on with you when school starts again. Take care and stay in touch.

  3. You have to admit though, I didn't exactly follow the packet you gave us. The other day I was looking through what I did over the year and was surprised at how much it evolved. I guess as long as you keep experimenting something's bound to come out of it. Oh my god I was beyond happy when I got that score! I was thinking that I'd most likely get a three or lower after seeing some of the other peoples stuff.
    =D
I'd love to post some of the stuff I've sketched but my camera is MIA!! It has been since during the school year. =[ I've been working on completely filling up a sketchbook that I got for graduation (my grade school art teacher went as part of my family and gave it to me as a present) and it's been working out pretty well so far. Maybe I'll be able to get a camera soon and post some of the stuff I've been doing.
I'll definitely stay in touch! Hopefully your new class won't mind if I pop in on some of their posts too.
    ^-^

Glad you were pleased with your score. :-)
Hope you fill that sketchbook. And yes, if you keep working, things do happen! Have a great rest of the summer and stop by whenever.
